Raising money to buy a Steinway Model B
for the new auditorium

I am a senior at North Oldham High School. I have a 4.2 grade point average and am enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes this year. This year, I have decided to do a fundraiser for North - purely outside of school - to raise $70,000 for a new Steinway grand piano for our auditorium. I plan on purchasing the Model B, which is about 7 feet long.

A MUSICIAN IN THE MAKING
I have played the piano for twelve years. I have learned pieces by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, and Debussy. I hope to major in Musical Performance next year. When trying to decide where to have my Senior Recital this year, I realized the new auditorium would be the perfect place. Then I learned that a piano was not in the plans, and I immediately knew I must take action.

Patrick Henry Hughes
March 13th, 4:00 p.m.

Come hear the truly awesome Patrick Henry Hughes in concert at the North Oldham High School auditorium on Saturday March 13th. Patrick has overcome physical disadvantages that most of us cannot imagine to become an extraordinary musician and a renowned inspirational speaker. The concert is on Saturday, March 13th and begins at 4:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the North Oldham High School front office or at the door. Ticket prices are $15; buy 4 or more tickets for $12.50 each. Thanks to Patrick's extraordinary good will and graciousness, 100% of ticket sales will go directly into the Steinway Initiative fund for NOHS. Don't miss this opportunity to witness an outstanding performance. More information about Patrick.

Upcoming events

So far, we have passed the 10% mark toward our goal. We are now working on plans for other events, but we sure could use some help. If you would like to help us get this project across the goal line, please contact us. We would love your help. Thanks!

Support

Although I initiated this fundraiser on my own, I already have a broad support group, including:

Need Your Support

I have also had some PR support from 90.5 WUOL, Louisville's Classical radio station, and the Courier-Journal. $70,000 is a lot of money, and while I could make this happen through carwashes and bake sales, we won’t see a piano for years. So what I really need is individuals or sponsors who are willing to make a major contribution. Of course, I fully appreciate any amount that can be given.

88 keys

You can contribute at any level you wish. One way is through our 88 keys program. A donation of $200 puts your name on one key. Here are the options:

  • $200 for one key
  • $600 for a chord, or
  • $1600 for a full octave.

But any amount will help.

Thanks!!!

What the Steinway will mean for North Oldham

  • Steinways last over 100 years, so this could and will affect several generations of students. It's amazing what can happen when you give a young child an instrument.
  • This piano will be made available to students from the entire community. We want it to be used all the time.
  • NOHS and Oldham County will gain considerable prestige for being one of the few Kentucky high schools with a Steinway.
  • The Steinway will create the possibility of getting performances at NOHS of a nationally known pianist – a possibility that would not exist without it.
  • This will be an inspiration for our younger students, perhaps encouraging them to pursue music studies.
  • The Steinway will be a centerpiece for a budding chamber orchestra.

Past Events Judy Carmichael, November 6th, 2009

The auditorium's grand opening concert with Ms. Carmichael was just out of this world fantastic. We might be accused of overdoing it here with the superlatives, but she was such a complete entertainer. Her piano playing was fabulous, and she interspersed it with some truly interesting stories from her world-wide travels, including experiences with some of the all-time greats in jazz. In person, she was so warm and gracious, we all were truly amazed. Anyone who loves good music would have loved that performance and we all now love Judy Carmichael. Visit her web site. Trust us on this, you will love her, too.
